So, biology class was really interesting today. we watched a video about a cancer research study that happened like seven years ago. so, back in like the seventies, there was this drug to make pregnant women not have morning sickness, but their kids ended up being deformed because of this thing called angiotensin. basically, it stopped new blood vessels from growing in the baby. so, this old dude was trying to figure out how cancer cells could be stopped from growing, and realized that the problem wasnt the tumors, it was the healthy blood cells feeding the tumors. this other thing called angiogenesis, or the growth of new blood cells, happens with the tumor. in other words, the tumor gives off some chemical that calls blood vessels to it, and where there shouldnt normally be blood vessels, such as in your cornea (the clear part on the top of your eyes), start growing and feed the tumor that wouldnt otherwise be growing. So, this drug that made kids deformed stopped the growth of blood vessels, so, after decades of testing, they found the one molecule that safely did that. they tested it in rats, made it into drugs, tested it in humans, and it worked on most people. out of 25 people, only 2 didnt improve. so there are like 2 drugs out there that usually work for cancer patients, and it isnt a poison like chemo is.
